THE WORLD OF THE GREEKS
(Eng: I was born a Greek and I shall die as a Greek.)
"We are all Greeks. Our laws, our literature, our religion, our arts, have their root in Greece."

Why we should be proud to be greek

* Because we are European Champions in Soccer * Because we are European Champions in Basketball * Because Paparizou (singer) made us Eurovision Champions * Because we buy whole watermelons and not in slices * Because we buy whole lambs and not in pieces * Because when we buy feta we buy at least a kilo and not 150gr. * Because nights in Greece finish in the morning * Because flirting is our national hobby * Because we are world champions in sex * Because we always moan about the public sector and everyone seeks to get a job in it * Because we go out almost every night even if we are penniless * Because we respect our Grandmothers more than our wives * Because we know how to spend better than we know how to save * Because we never visit others empty-handed * Because there is no way to explain to foreigners what kapsoura” is… (a burning desire for someone) * Because we do not share the cost of petrol with those we give a ride * Because for the sake of a woman we would wage war for 10 years (Trojan war) * Because we are everywhere around the planet * Because we love and hate with passion * Because the word “filotimo” (a synonym of honour, helping someone because it is the right thing to do) doesn’t exist in any other language * Because whenever the foreigners can not find a word, they bloody steal one of ours * Because we spend our high and low times with our friends and family, not with therapists and counsellors * Because Socrates, Platon, and Aristotle were Hellenic and the whole world still quotes them * Because we invented theatre * Because we gave birth to Democracy * Because we discovered logic * Because we jumpstarted science * Because we are proud of our culture, not of our wars * Because Jesus Christ’s best friends where Greeks * Because when others were discovering meat, we already had cholesterol * Because when we were building the Parthenon, the others were still sleeping under trees * Because when others created wars, we created Games to stop wars * Because we have a distinction between Eros (falling in love) & Agape(innocent love), while we feel both passionately * Because we don’t use ketchup or mayonnaise with our food. It tastes damn good anyway! * Because we tossed our ancient alphabet to the Romans and our medieval alphabet to the Slavs * Because we get angry quickly but forget all about it even quicker * Because we are not ashamed to cry * Because we dance when we are sad and party when we are happy * Because we work to live and we do not live to work * Because 97% of the stars’s names are Hellenic * Because we always talk about getting in a diet after we had our meal * Because although we know danger well, we dare * Because when you shout “brother” in the streets, everyone turns around * Because “Greeks do not fight like heroes, heroes fight like Greeks” (Winston Churchill, 1941) * Because we speak loudly and laugh even louder!!! @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

The Greeks are a sexy, sytlish, intelligent race (opposite of the Turks), who basically invented civilization. Greece and Cyprus are where most Greeks in the world live.

Although there are large amounts of Greeks/Cypriots in Australia and parts of South Africa as well as the UK.

Greeks have many cultural similarities to Italians, and conquered Sicily and most of Southern Italy. Greeks are loved all over the world apart from in Turkey, where they are so jealous of them.

Greeks are great so are Spaniards and Italians.4. greeks

The best kind of people you will ever know

there are two kinds of people .... people who are greek and people who wish they were5. Greeks

Two definitions apply

a) A highly sophisticated Hellenic culture during the classical era of European history. Produced Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, Pythagoras, Archimedes (in the then Greek colony of Sicily), Diogenes, and eventually Alexander the great. Also the inventors of Democracy. They spoke a vibrant language that is still studied today in order to read their beautiful poetry and profound philosophy.

b) A group of hairy, backwards thinking male chauvinists and large, overprotective mothers who insist on reminding their children twice a day that "there are only two kinds of people, those who are Greek and them that wish they was Greek' which they probably stole from 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' which by the way is one of the 4 to 9 films they’ve ever watched.

My Greek Friend: “Hey, do you guys wanna see a movie?”
Me: “Sure, how bout that new Spielberg film”
Greek friend's mother: (suddenly appearing from behind a corner and telling us in a wise voice and completely without precedent) “There are only two types of people, them that are Greek and them that wish they was Greek.” (Greek mother returns to her moping as Greek father returns home from his job at Parthenon Plumbers or whatever pseudo-classical name he's given his place of business and demand his lunch.)5. refer to two groups of people:

1) the ancient hellenes

2) modern greeks

unbeknownst or outright denied by "modern" greeks, there isn't really any relation racially between the hellenes and the "moderns". the slavic migrations between 600-800ad completely overwhelmed greece. the population of greece has always been small, even moreso during those times. constant warfare depleted the population further. the slavs managed to settle thessaly, aetolia, macedoni a,thrace and the
peloponesos. virtually every major part of greece, save for boeotia(which is where dislocated albanians settled)was overrun by the slavs. to this day there are still towns with slavic etymology. the "greeks" of today are nothing more than the descendants of hellenized slavs, which was the policy of the church to gain converts, and of the byzantine empire in order to free itself from a two front war against eastern armies of islamic faith. the gene pool of the hellenes, while not completely decimated was absorbed by the slavs.
the slavs were classified as greek speaking, slav speaking, or bulgarian speaking. through the years other ethnicities were thrown into the mix: normans, venetians, romania ns,turks egyptians. modern day peoples of the balkans have varying degrees of the admixture of these ethnicities, and the "greeks" are no exception.

it is foolish of the greeks to believe they are directly descended from the ancient hellenes.8. greeks

10 Things You Did not Know About Ancient Greeks
- They founded the European culture
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor

Greek hoplites
Enlarge picture
1. Ancient Greek culture founded the western culture, with its modern traits of developing intellectual and scientific skills, a culture based on reasoning, investigation and experimentation. Ancient Greeks developed medicine, logics, aesthetics, metaphysics, mathematics and geometry, and this gave them a profound intellectual formation, allowed then to live more, made complex measurements that eased their trade and determined them to live in perfectly organized urban structures. The Greek civilization was made by man, for man and controlled by man. The integral formation of the individual was scientific, intellectual, artistic and sportive.

2. The Greek culture was defined by its art. The three architectural Greek classes: Doric, Ionic and Corinthian, and the anatomic interpretation of the Greek culture will always be actual.
The Parthenon of Athens remains the symbol of Greek architecture, while Myron’s Discobolus is one of the emblems of Greek culture. The Parthenon was built during Pericles and it is a temple dedicated to the goddess Pallas Athena, being the work of Phidias, who made it in 15 years. In its days, the temple harbored a gold and ivory statue of the goddess, represented with helmet, shield and spear.

3. The mild Mediterranean climate allowed the Greeks to spend most of their activities outside, in houses’ porticoes, streets, squares and markets. Greek houses were just a shelter for the night or against rain; houses have few small windows protecting against the heat and light. Most meetings and social life occurred in the main square of a city, called agora.

Greek phalanx formation made of hoplites
Enlarge picture
4. On the highest part of a city, called Acropolis, temples were built. Temples were not just religious buildings, but also the place where politics and justice acts were made. The temple was usually surrounded by a colonnade and it was divided in three parts: naos (portico), cella (sanctuary preserving the image of the god), and opistodoma (treasure room of the god where offerings given by the adorers were stored).

5. Each Greek city (polis) represented an independent small state. The city was sustained by the crops gathered on the surrounding fields, but also by trade with crafted goods. The inhabitants of a city rejected any foreign intervention in their politics, and the power balance was maintained by strong armies, as all men capable of handling a weapon entered the army. The war-like society of the ancient Greeks produced the most powerful ancient infantry soldier: the Greek hoplite. The heavily armored hoplites of Alexander the Great conquered the world known by those times.

Not all the Greek cities were democracies (ruled by citizens); some or ruled by kings, like Sparta, while Macedonia was a real kingdom.

6. Women were given the domestic work, children care and many manual works, like weaving. Greek women wove flax and wool. The fabrics were used for making chiton (a sleeveless tunic, worn by both sexes) and peplos, a body-length garment worn only by women. Women had their dependencies called gynaecea, while men had theirs, called androcea. Greek women could practice sports, had juridical personality for trade operations and could have intellectual activities. Some Greek women excelled in arts and poetry; the most famous was Sappho of Lesbos.

Pathenon today

7. The education of the young was a priority for the ancient Greeks, so various philosophers came with their theories of what was best in the formation of the citizens. The education included the study of philosophy, history, literature, science, sport and music (playing zither and flute). The aim was to grow up honest adults, with high artistic sense and good physical condition. The children of rich families were educated by personal pedagogues, teaching them basic knowledge. Later, they were entrusted to specialized masters that detailed them specific matters.

8. The poor soils of Greece forced Greeks to exploit sea's resources and to look for new sources of wealth. This boosted the class of ship builders, sailors and traders. Greeks founded colonies in very remote points of the Mediterranean and Black Seas. The colonies served for the trade with the locals, but, in time, the colonies turned in hotbeds of Greek culture, and those in Sicily or coasts of Asia Minor turned into another Greeces.

9. Important crops in ancient (and modern) Greece were olives and grapes. Olive oil was used both as an aliment and for lighting, but especially as a main trade good. Still, at their origin, the Greeks were shepherds tribes (like all Indo-Europeans) and this is betrayed by the omnipresence of the shepherd, animal husbandry and livestock in all ancient Greek legends, Iliad (the poem of the siege of Troy) and Odyssey included.

10. Greek sportsmen smeared their bodies with oil and grease, using a curbed tool. Greeks enjoyed wrestling and (a type of) boxing. The men had to be totally naked when practicing sports.

Το καλύτερο είναι όταν κάποιοι, έξω από δω, δίνοντας ρέστα, χρησιμοποιούν τα γνωστά “η Eλλάδα είναι η κοιτίδα του πολιτισμού μας” ή “η ιστορία της είναι και ιστορία μας”, και αυτό το “μας” είναι που μου τη δίνει, λες και ο Όμηρος είπε στους Iσπανούς να ξεκάνουν εκατομμύρια Iνδιάνους στη Nότια Aμερική, λες και ο Πίνδαρος έβαλε τους Γερμανούς να κάνουν τους Eβραίους γκιουβετσάκι και να βάλουν το χεράκι τους μαζί με τον πάπα για να διαλυθεί η Γιουγκοσλαβία, ή μήπως ο Aισχύλος δίδαξε στους Aμερικανούς (απόγονους αποβρασμάτων αγγλικής, γαλλικής, ισπανικής καταγωγής) πώς να διαλύουν χώρες ολόκληρες και λαούς, σύμφωνα με τα γούστα των πολυεθνικών; Στο δικό μας λεξιλόγιο πρωτογράφτηκε η λέξη Eλευθερία κι εκεί είναι ακόμα μια διαφορά μας. Ο Έλληνας είχε καλλιεργήσει στον χώρο του, πριν χιλιάδες χρόνια, ένα προϊόν, μια πρώτη ύλη εκρηκτική, τη συνείδηση της ελευθερίας. Την έκανε και εξαγωγή. Όλα τα κάναμε εξαγωγή —εκτός απ’ το φως μας, που άλλο τέτοιο δεν υπάρχει πουθενά— κι από πουθενά δεν πήραμε φράγκο. Και βρισκόμαστε τώρα να μας μαλώνουν οι Eυρωπαίοι γιατί είμαστε χύμα, δεν ακολουθούμε τις εντολές, τις προθεσμίες και δεν μελετάμε τ’ αποτελέσματα των ερευνών τους —που δείχνουν ότι πάμε κατά διαόλου— να μας βγάζουν γλώσσα οι Ολλανδοί —ποιοι; οι Ολλανδοί, οι τυρογαλάδες— και να μας νουθετούν οι Η.Π.Α. να μην είμαστε άτακτοι και ζωηροί με τους γείτονες. Το κακό δεν είναι ότι όλοι αυτοί που μας χρωστάνε μας βάζουν χέρι. Το κακό είναι ότι μασάμε κι αντί να εντοπίσουμε τα λάθη μας και να τσαμπουκαλευτούμε, κάνουμε πάλι τα ίδια λάθη και τους κάνουμε χαρές και γέλια με την ουρά στα σκέλια. Δυστυχώς, θα αναγκαστώ να συμφωνήσω ότι τα ’χουμε κι εμείς τα κουλά μας. Τα τρώμε στη μάπα σε υπουργεία, σε δημόσιες υπηρεσίες, στις συγκοινωνίες, στην τηλεόραση και πάει λέγοντας. Aλλά αυτό το παραμύθι της ενωμένης Eυρώπης (με τις πόσες ταχύτητες;) είναι για μικρά παιδιά. Δεν χρειάζεται να αντιγράψουμε την ξενερωσιά των Ευρωπαίων και να ξεπατικώσουμε τις συμπεριφορές τους, αφού δεν είμαστε και δεν θα γίνουμε ποτέ ίσα κι όμοια. Εμείς είμαστε Βαλκάνιοι κι αν κάτι θα ’χαμε να υποστηρίξουμε ως μοντέλο, θα ’ταν αυτό που ’ναι γραμμένο στο DNA μας. Άλλωστε οι πρόγονοι μας προκαλούν! Aπό τον Aρχάνθρωπο των Πετραλώνων, στον Πλάτωνα και τον Eπίκουρο, στον Περικλή, τον Λεωνίδα, τον Όμηρο, τον Eυκλείδη, τον Πυθαγόρα, τον Φειδία, τον Iκτίνο, τη Σαπφώ... Προγονοπληξία θα πουν μερικοί συμπατριώτες ενδοτικοί, Eυρωπαίοι περισσότερο των από καταγωγής Eυρωπαίων, ιδιοκτήτες μικρομάγαζων. Ποια προγονοπληξία όμως; Οι πρόγονοι του σημερινού 18άρη και 16άρη (που γαμεί τα λύκεια και καλά τα κάνει, έτσι όπως τα καταντήσανε) είναι ο Γρηγόρης Λαμπράκης, είναι ο Aλέκος Παναγούλης, είναι οι 1.800 αγνοούμενοι της Kύπρου, είναι η νεαρή δασκάλα Kλάδου που βίασαν και στραγγάλισαν οι εθνικόφρονες Μπαντουβάδες, είναι αυτοί που αντιστάθηκαν στους Γερμανούς, είναι ο Pήγας Φεραίος που δολοφόνησαν οι κοτζαμπάσηδες και οι Φαναριώτες, είναι ο Kοσμάς ο Aιτωλός, ο Mακρυγιάννης, ο Θεόφιλος, ο Kολοκοτρώνης με την αρχαία περικεφαλαία. Aπό ποιους προγόνους τελικά να “λυτρωθούμε”;
